Many women think of shoes as the cherry on top of a great outfit – that final touch that turns your look from good to great.
However, there’s more to shoes than just style. They should also be comfortable and practical, no matter where you’re wearing them. And even though in the fashion world it’s common to hear the phrase “beauty before comfort” tossed around, the two really don’t have to be mutually exclusive. In other words, it’s possible to find shoes that will make you look great and feel comfy at the same time. That said, here are five shoe rules you should live by:
1. Buy the right size
Always purchase shoes that are the correct size for your feet. Shoes that fit too tightly can cause many foot problems, including hammer toes, bunions, ingrown toenails and corns, on top of being generally uncomfortable and painful to wear. Although many women wear the same size for years on end, it’s actually common for foot size to change over time, so it’s a good idea to measure your feet every few years. Measure from the tip of your big toe to the end of your heel, and then from one side of the ball of your foot to the other to find the width.
2. Opt for comfort
Get to know your feet. This will make it easier to buy shoes that will be comfortable as well as fashionable. For instance, if you have wider feet or high arches, look for wide shoes or arch support. You should also work on getting a good grasp of your heel limit. If you can easily and comfortably walk in 4-inch heels all day, absolutely wear them, but if you feel better in 2-inch heels, don’t buy a tall style that won’t work for you.
3. Take your time
When shopping for shoes online, you should first consider what style of shoes you need. Narrow your footwear choices by category: Are they for the office, running errands comfortably or a friend’s outdoor wedding? Then, give yourself enough time to find exactly what you’re looking for, while ensuring the pair you choose will also be easy to wear. There are tons of options online, so don’t rush into the process.
4. Be kind to your feet
Even if you can wear high heels all day everyday with no problems, that doesn’t necessarily mean you should. Like too-tight shoes, high heels can also cause some foot and toe conditions that could result in a lot of pain later in life. Not to mention, heels can also affect your knees, hips and back when worn constantly. Every few days, try to give yourself a break from the pumps and stilettos. Wear loafers or boots to work once or twice a week or fashion tennis shoes on the weekend.
5. Take a risk
While you shouldn’t let style outweigh comfort in your shoe choices, don’t be afraid to let some of your personality show through in the shoes you buy! Find shoes with bright colors, fun details and cool patterns that you’ll want to wear over and over again.
