Gray is the new black
It’s important to always have a decent amount of neutrals in your wardrobe so there isn’t a single look that’s out of reach. For years, black has been the go-to neutral, pulling togetherĀ outfit after outfit. There’s a good chance that if you look in your closet, an overwhelming majority of your staple pieces are black or have black in them. It’s also likely that you’ve gotten a bit bored with them. After all, one can survive on a single for shade for only so long! The good news, though, is that gray is working its way up as the new hot shade to pull your outfits together. Here’s how to wear gray like black:
Grays on grays
Anyone who ever told you that gray is drab and boring clearly hasn’t been wearing gray correctly. In fact, a gray on gray ensemble can be just as chic as a black on black or white on white one. With so many variations of the color gray, it’s easy to mix and match an entire outfit without even tossing in another color. There are warm and cool tones of gray, that either have more of a beigeĀ or a blue feel to them. Don’t hesitate to match multiple tones together!
For example, try a charcoal pair of skinny dress pants, paired with a chunky cable knit sweater in a lighter shade of gray. This can be made more casual with a pair of sneakers, or stepped up a notch with a stylish pair of booties.
A pop of color
Never underestimate the power of a pop of color. Simply throwing a red handbag or a blue skirt into the mix can really take your outfit up to the next level. Many believe that colorblocking only really works with blacks or whites, but using this fashion trick in a gray outfit is just as easy. If you’re concerned about looking too drab in your gray outfit, those statement heels that you’re always too nervous to wear are a great way to ensure that doesn’t happen!
“Add a sequined skirt for a fun contrast.”
Remember metallics
Did you know that it’s scientifically impossible to look plain when you’re wearing metallics? OK, so that might not be a proven fact, but have you ever seen a boring outfit with metallics mixed in? Wear that gray sweater with a sequined skirt for a fun contrast, or mix a sparkly clutch with your gray T-shirt dress. Another option is to step it up a notch with your jewelry. If your outfit is simple and subdued, you have plenty of leeway when it comes to going bold with your accessories. Some chandelier earrings, a statement necklace or shiny bangles are fun and exciting options for dressing up your gray outfit.
Consider your makeup
Your outfit isn’t the only aspect that contributes to your overall look. For example, your hair and makeup can’t be forgotten when you’re getting ready for a night on the town! If you want to keep it simple with your gray outfit, you can kick up your makeup game for a little bit of pizzazz.
Try a dark and sultry smoky eye with your gray dress, or even a red or pink lip. If either of these options seem like a bit much for you, you can use some eye shadow with shimmer in it instead of using your regular matte palette. The more neural your outfit is, the bigger impact some fun makeup will have on your look.
