Wear one item multiple ways: The keys to versatility

You have many choices when selecting clothing to add to your closet. While one or two stand-alone pieces are wonderful additions, most often you’ll want items that you can mix and match. For many women, versatility is the biggest consideration when selecting articles for their wardrobe. With more options, your personal style can keep evolving.

When filling your closet, look for clothing you can wear in multiple ways. Here are just a few pieces that fit the bill:

Blazers

These structured jackets aren’t just for the workplace, although that’s where they’re often found. Women’s fashion blazers are also perfect for more casual looks, however, especially when worn as an additional layer on crisp fall days. Pair yours with boyfriend jeans and colorful sneakers for running errands or with women’s skinny jeans and strappy sandals for a night out. Feel free to wear this option over a tucked-in blouse and pencil skirt for work, just don’t forget about its wearability outside the office.

Uneven hemlines

In recent years, high-low hemlines have been all over the runway. Whether it’s dresses or tops, the versatility of the item enables you to wear it almost any way you want. Try a tunic top for women with an uneven hemline over a pair of leggings, casual shorts for women or capris for a more laid-back occasion like a picnic or summer party. Dress it up for an evening out with the girls with skinny or flare-leg jeans and colorful wedges to spice up the look.

Collared shirts

When you think of collared shirts, you likely envision a refined look that’s professional and smart. Similar to blazers, however, these pieces can be mixed and matched with more casual items for weekends, vacations and other times off. Feel free to wear this article of clothing with a pair of distressed denim jeans and comfortable shoes for a more relaxed look or button the top all the way up and add a statement necklace and high-waisted pencil skirt for work. Go for an even more unique workplace outfit by wearing this piece under your favorite dress.

Little black dress

For years, the little black dress has been a closet staple. While having this item in your wardrobe is a smart choice, you don’t have to limit yourself to just that color. Try a little white or navy version as well to add even more neutral dresses to your look. To dress it down, wear your LBD under a jean jacket – maybe even one that’s embellished – with a pair of funky sneakers. Of course, this dress is perfect for the office as well. Make it look professional with strappy heels or women’s pumps and a structured blazer.

Versatility is important when building out your wardrobe. You want pieces that will never go out of style, but that can also be updated to be on trend. These closet staples cannot be overlooked, but don’t be afraid to step out of the box with your fashion choices!
